In a prominent elevated position in Highweek, Newton Abbot, this house has spectacular views and enjoys a secluded, detached feel. The house has been completely reconfigured to allow reception spaces to address the view and to provide an appropriate entrance. Additional bedrooms have been created in an extension to the rear, with a generous master suite occupying the new timber clad dormer.

This 1970s bungalow enjoys a privileged position and outlook over Newton Abbot. The childhood home of the client, the house needed extensive work to bring it up to modern standards and create a home for family life and looking forward to retirement. The circulation was dark and cramped and the accommodation did not make best use of the location and orientation. The reception spaces were tucked away at the eastern end, away from the main access, with bedrooms enjoying the best views and southerly aspect.
A series of diagrams revealed the strategy for the project. The front door would be moved to the western end to address the drive and pedestrian access. A zone of circulation then bisects the footprint, with reception rooms forming an enfilade along the south elevation, and bedrooms and service spaces to the north. The footprint of the old conservatory is utilised for additional bedrooms and a dormer extension above provides a generous master suite with distant views.
A bespoke timber stair sits in a double height atrium space, with a bold timber clad dormer breaking the external form of the original house. This space forms a lantern in the centre of the plan, with high level glazing bringing light deep into the home.
The changes create a clear hierarchy between the public and private areas of the house and have allowed the main reception spaces to enjoy the light and views, creating warm, welcoming spaces. The main rooms all connect to a south facing terrace that enjoys the sun throughout the day.
